Trailblazing conceptual artist John Baldessari is known for his innovative use of borrowed imagery. He references artwork by two iconic artists in his Eight Soups series: Henri Matisse’s 1912 painting Goldfish and Sculpture and Andy Warhol’s classic Campbell’s soup can series from the 1960s. Taking the fishbowl out of its original context, playing with various color combinations, and adding narrative text to the bottom of each image, Baldessari transforms the object and image into something totally new, evoking novel perspectives from the mind of the artist to the mind of the viewer.
