Translating the vastness of the universe into intimate works of art, Vija Celmins invites us to look closely, to fathom the immensity and intricacy of ocean waves, deserts, spider webs, and night skies. Drawing on memory and found images, Celmins meticulously “redescribes” the natural world in photo-realistic drawings, paintings, and prints. She is most interested in precisely documenting our infinite realities; the potential ideas and philosophies behind a given work are not her focus. Celmins consistently excludes context and perspective. This immersive image plunges us into the depth of our universe and makes us wonder: are we looking up at these stars from earth, or are we already in space?
