One lollipop casually, and precariously, is set at the edge of a tabletop. Wayne Thiebaud shows restraint in this pared down lithograph, depicting a sucker made of green and white sugar. The candy’s pinwheel pattern is drawn with handmade precision reminiscent of a child's dedication to drawing inside the lines. Thiebaud is best-known for colorful paintings of American confections and temping treats that remind us of childhood, evoking warmth and nostalgia. Influenced by comics, cartoons and other artists, he infuses an element of peculiarity and depth in his sophisticated compositions through depictions of light and shadow. Focusing here on one object of memory surrounded by blank space, our eyes can glaze over, and our mind can wonder back to simpler times.
